Battle of Cape Fear River! September 26-27, 1718: Stede Bonnet, 46 pirates, his sloop the Royal James , and two others were attacked by two eight-gun sloops, the Henry with 8 guns and 70 men captained by John Masters and the Sea Nymph , with 8 Guns and 60 men captained by Fayrer Hall, sent by governor Robert Johnson of South Carolina. The Battle of Cape Fear River , which occurred just South of Wilmington, NC at the mouth of the Cape Fear River, lasted nearly six hours and ended when the rising tide allowed the government troops to refloat their vessels while Bonnet was still hard aground.
